Suddenly Broadside

Wow... Its been quite a while since I last posted anything.

I been on a bit of a break and I can't tell you why. It's nothing serious I just can't workout why I haven't found the time to sit down and paint something. I haven't distanced myself totally from my Tau I have managed to get one or two games in with Karitas.

Anyway so I've cleared a space in the office brought all new plastic boxes to keep all the paint and brushes in and actually painted something.

It's my one and only Broadside. I always try and take this guy on to the field whenever so felt he deserved some attention.
So take a look.

The only changes I have made to the model is the head, I was given an XV9 and it came with three heads. the heads in this kit are better than the original model's being shorter but still keeping some strong angles making the model a little less lanky.

I'm considering moving on to the XV9 next but he has required a considerable amount of green stuff as he came with a good many casting faults.

I'll post picks of him later.

Eldar encounter

So having been away from the blog for a while I thought I'd give a quick update before I start something new. I have been meaning to get some new brushes as the cheap ones I started with have gone all hook ended. Also picked up another Hammerhead and can't wait to play with two on the field.

Also after dragging a friend along to a few games he final brought his own army. He decided on Eldar and brought the battleforce and an Autarch. We have played two 500 point games so far and I have won both. It not been easy though. I'm still learning my army and having to help him understand his mean games take a long while. Anyway that's why we all play. So there that's me. Hopefully after some new brushes you can we some real progress on here.

Trial by Air Brush

Well I'm finally back on the painting table. Its been a while since I held a brush in anger and didn't know where to start. All of my current army is built and filling up my "to be painted" list and having played most of my game un-painted so far I have a real thirst for colour. The dynamic Stealth suits modelled by Karitas are itching for spiffy paint job.

Talking of Karitas some of you my know that he built and painted some Kroot for me. the main reasons for doing this was that its stopped me from constantly moaning that I didn't know how to best paint the little monsters and also It gave Karitas a reason to try making a tutorial on airbrushing.

So having spent the best part of a week on and off editing the video for him I caught the airbrushing bug but decided to try it on something bigger. Roll out the Devilfish.

As you can see it's very WIP at the moment. I have a few bleed line issues and some of the chosen colours need changing but all in all I'm happy with progress. my main problem is I went at it not knowing what I wanted to do so sort of guessed my way along before stopping to think. If any of you out there have some inspiration to share let me know.

Lastly. I went back to a standard brush and gave a drone a go.

Let me know what you think as I'm always open to new ideas.....

Clearing the painting table.

Just thought I'd post an update to let you all know what I've been up to as the Blog has been quiet for some time.

I have now finished all three of the Stealth troops and only have a one XV8 and a couple of Fireworriors for the first squad and one whole squad of 12, 2 devilfish and a hammerhead left to go.

On top of this I have the Kroot to deal with. I have known for a while that I wanted them red but have been unable get a good finish in a colour I like. As per usual I turned to Karitas.

After he helped to build a few of the kroot I thought I'd let him have a go at painting them to see if he could come up with some results.

Well as usual he has. you can see them HERE. He had a few problems photography wise but I'll let him explain that. He has promised a Step by step guide on how it was done and as he is using this to force me to try painting with an airbrush I hope its a very detailed guide.

Ill Post shots of the finished Stealth team soon and once I have some more primer I think I'm going to try a devilfish.

Credit where Credit is Due

I wanted to convert some of my Stealth Suit's and having failed to get inspiration myself I asked Karitas to have a go and I'm very pleased with the results. Go over to his blog Excommunicate Tratoris and check them out.

Stealth Decision

The next figure to receive the paint treatment is a Stealth Trooper.

Originally I was going to paint them a dark green. I got so far as to basecoat them in the chosen colour. But after receiving a Shadowsun for Christmas and loving the white armour I decided to change. I gave it two thin coats of white to get rid of the green then 1 coat of black wash to fill in the detail. Then went at it with the topcoat.

I’m happy with the results although the finish could be a little smother. I’m hoping that the new clean ones will receive paint a little better.

Sorry again for the picture quality they are much darker than the true result.

Break from the Norm.....

As previously mentioned here’s a few of the small conversions I've been up to. They're not as ambitious as some of the guys out there, as I’m a bit reluctant to chop up good models but I’m slowly getting braver,

First up is my next Shas’ui, for some reason locked away in my head the leader should never wear a helmet so I’ve carved up another head added some damage and used it on the base. I also wanted a standard barer so using a gun support arm I removed the hand spun it round and used some brass rod as the pole with part of an Ethereal symbol of office as the cap. I plan to add a green stuff flag, but that’s next weekend.

Next up is a plain old Firewarrior. I’ve used the Binocular hands from the tank guy sprue, carved the one arm off and added a pulse rifle. I have also chopped too sets of legs apart to make them look like they are stepping up on to the slate (stolen from the garden) for a better view.

Talking of the tank guy sprue, I tried to create a unique Tank commander by again removing one of the arms from the binoculars and adding a Carbine arm. I then chopped most of the carbine away and added the end of a pulse rifle to create a smaller more single handed weapon. To finish I added a piece of left over lead as a thumb.

Last but not least, My Ethereal. I Have removed his symbols of office and added an honour blade. Made of Brass rod with the symbol of office added to the base of the pole and some bits from the good old bits box to decorate the top. I’m planning to add a blade later, which I’m currently on the hunt for.

They're still a bit rough but after a quick tidy with the file and a base coat they should look a bit more complete.
